Mariposa Arts Theatre is pleased to present Ariel Dorman's Mystery Thriller, winner of the Lawrence Olivier Award for best new play.
This play concerns Paulina, a political activist, who escaped and is recovering after being blindfolded, tortured and raped by an unseen captor. Her tormentor delighted in playing Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" during his unspeakable acts.
One stormy night her husband, Gerardo, gets a flat tire and is rescued by a kindly doctor, Dr. Miranda.
Gerardo invites the good doctor home for a drink and what follows is a weekend of sheer terror.
Paulina recognizes the Doctor's voice and sets about proving that he was the sadist that degraded her. She puts Miranda on "trial" and plots her revenge.
The play, to be performed in the intimate Studio Theatre and directed by Angela Munday, is set at a remote sea-side villa in an unnamed South American country. The Broadway production featured Glen Close. It was later made into a feature film directed by Roman Polanski with Sigourney Weaver as Paulina.
Death and the Maiden is a heart-stopping edge-of-seat suspense thriller.
It contains strong language and adult situations and is not suitable for persons under the age of 18.
